How much is Parental Leave Pay?

Checked 22 October 2026. Current government payment rates, a partner's worked example and links to calculate your own share.

Full guide: paternity leave in Australia.

The short answer

$200.94 a day before tax, or $1,004.70 for five paid days in 2026-27. Taking 20 days at that rate gives $4,018.80 before tax.

A 20-day example for a dad or partner

Suppose your child is born or adopted from 1 July 2026, you qualify for Parental Leave Pay, and you take all 20 days reserved for you during 2026-27.

  1. Paid days: 20.
  2. Daily rate: $200.94.
  3. Before-tax payment: 20 × $200.94 = $4,018.80.

That is four five-day weeks of government pay. It is not four weeks of your usual salary. You may be able to agree a larger share of the family allowance with the other parent.

Tax and super

Parental Leave Pay is taxable. Your final take-home amount depends on other income and your circumstances. Use the Parental Leave Pay calculator and after-tax estimate for your own days and salary.

For children born or adopted from 1 July 2025, the ATO also makes a 12% super contribution on eligible government pay. It is paid automatically in the following financial year and is separate from the cash example above. See how super on Parental Leave Pay works.

What the payment does not decide

Government pay does not establish how long you can be away from work. Check unpaid parental leave and your employer's paid leave policy separately. Services Australia's work, income and residence tests still apply.

Rate and day allowance checked 22 October 2026 against Services Australia. A new rate generally applies from 1 July; do not use this rate as a promise for later financial years.
